"Showing Seeing": Curatorial Note
By Riya Arora
Straight Circle India sent out an open call for neurodivergent/disabled/underrepresented artists across India to submit their works for its inaugural virtual exhibit/sale - The First Circle, in June 2026.
With The First Circle, some questions take centre stage - each holding it's own complexity, depth and histories.
- What are the conditions placed upon an individual before we recognise them as an artist?
- How do inner-psychological and outer-economic/social forces influence creative practice?
- Within contemporary art spaces, how are visibility, legitimacy and artistic value constructed?
- To what extent do inherited, systemic, and traditional ideas shape the value assigned to art and artists in today’s world?
- Are these deeply embedded ideas of ‘value’ ever questioned,? If so, by whom, and under what conditions?
- How might these inherited systems of value be critically examined, challenged, or transformed - in theory as well as in practice?
- How do art-born aesthetic experiences/intellectual interpretations manifest in the ways audiences encounter, engage, and live with art?
- What might our understanding of art/creative practice look like when approached through - as curators, collectors, audiences- a lens of empathy, care, and authenticity?
